Self introduction I specialize in the study of maritime cultural heritage - the history of the relationship between people and oceans, lakes, rivers, and all bodies of water; how people interacted with, were affected by, and influenced watery realm. For instance, I study ships, harbors, fishery, flood control, and (water related) disaster. I use underwater archaeological research because above mentioned evidence is often found underwater. Since we cannot turn our eyes away from the various issues surrounding underwater cultural heritage, I continue to research heritage management systems, laws, and research techniques. In recent years, my focus is on ports – the point of interface between land and sea, as well as on on disaster archaeology.
Message to students Did you know that there are almost no universities in Japan where you can study maritime cultural heritage? It may be a rare study, but Japan has a high potential of this field – the country surrounded by the seas. It may seem difficult, but broadening your horizons will open doors that lead to a variety of possibilities. It is also deeply related to the various research themes of this research Institute. Why don't you open the door to the unknown?
