| Self introduction | The excavation of a shell mound I participated in as an undergraduate student sparked my interest in the relationship between the Jomon people and the sea, and I fell into the unusual field of archaeology: the study of shells and fish bones. Later, I worked as a curator at a museum in an inland region, where there are no shell mounds. Even there I encountered new research themes such as the Japanese wolf, distribution of marine products in historic periods, and history of horse breeding. In fact, one of the things that brought me to Teikyo University was my research on horses in Central Asia. for nearly 30 years I have been working mainly in the field in Japan, but I am now also involved in research in Kyrgyzstan and Georgia at the Institute. My research life has been haphazard, tackling themes as I come across them, but I find it rewarding to embark on a new theme no matter how old I am. |
| Message to students | Zooarchaeology is the study of past lifestyles and environments by deciphering information from shells and bones excavated from archaeological sites. Although often seen as a natural science-oriented discipline, archaeology, which targets a wide variety of artifacts excavated from archaeological sites, is now a comprehensive science that cannot be contained within the framework of the humanities. New discoveries are often made when different fields of study meet. Let’s find new research themes together, making the most of your young sensibilities that are not bound by existing frameworks! |
